Another Hot Day
The kids were in the pool
all afternoon
Boys and girls
Bikinis and fighting
A hormonal soup
And I wonder if she’ll remember this day when she is 50
How hot it was before she burst into bloom
At 2 am when I still couldn’t sleep, I took
My flabby body into that pool
The concrete around it was still warm and it wasn’t perfect
I could smell the chlorine and the electric cable marred the stars that I could not name
But as I floated, naked, I could sense the hanging swelling fruit all around me and I knew that the owl was still alive and that he was nearby
As I floated I thought:
How much freedom there is to be found when people are sleeping.
